As many of you know, we’ve been hard at work building The Old Firehouse Wine Bar at 40 Ingram Street. But while the bar’s opening won’t be till early in the New Year, we wanted to make sure Gallowglass Books could still be open this Christmas for our many wonderful and loyal customers.
As such, we’re very pleased to announce that the bookstore will be re-opening tomorrow — Thursday, December 1st 2011 — in a temporary location just around in the corner, in the Canada Building! The exact address is Unit #101, 225 Canada Avenue. The store hours will be Monday to Saturday, 10am – 5pm, though we will add extra hours closer to Christmas.
View Larger MapOur regular phone lines are still in transition, but you should be able to dial the store (250-746-4104) by Monday or Tuesday next week.
See you soon!

Gallowglass Books is still “OPEN” on the internet — so please feel free to place your orders online anytime — but the bricks-and-mortar storefront is temporarily closed as we undergo extensive renovations to add The Old Firehouse Wine Bar to the space.
Thank you for your patience. We’ll provide updates about the bookstore in this place in the coming months, or you can keep track of the wine bar’s progress via its website or Facebook page.
See you soon!

At Gallowglass Books, we’re having our semi-annual 25% off sale, starting Friday, May 28th and running till closing Saturday, June 5th. Every book in the store is discounted as we clear our overstock and look to make room for plenty more books to hit the shelves this summer.
So whether you’re looking for a paperback mystery to bring down to the beach (regularly $3.75 each, now only $2.81!) or any of our many rare books — or something in between – expect to get a great deal!
Note: We will NOT be taking in books to buy anytime in June. Please check back in July if you have items to sell. Thanks!

There’s been a temporary change to our bookstore’s hours, as we’ll no longer be open on Sundays in the near future. This is NOT a permanent thing, just temporary as we adjust to having a new member of the Gallowglass family arriving soon, a baby girl due any day now!
So the store hours, until further notice, are:
Monday to Saturday 10:00-5:00 pm
One more thing…
There may be a few days in the next couple weeks where these regular hours are not adhered to either. Our apologies in advance for any inconvenience this may cause, and we invite you to call the store at 250-746-4104 if you have any questions.
Thank you!

As some of you may have read, in last week’s Victoria Times-Colonist there was a nice piece about Gallowglass Books as part of a promotional insert on businesses in Downtown Duncan. The article was about Jeff and I (Alanah), and how we originally met. (Here’s the link [PDF] if anyone wishes to read it. Our thanks to Erin Morgan for the thoughtful article and to Agnes Caravati for the lovely photo!)
Anyway, one of the wonderful benefits of that article was all the people it brought into the store to congratulate us on our impending parenthood. We were particularly touched by Zoë, Mike and their gorgeous daughter Abigail who, despite only knowing us through a brief visit to the store last summer, came all the way up from Victoria today — Christmas Eve — to drop off a thoughtful gift for our baby. What an amazingly kind thing to do! We certainly hope they’ll stay in touch! Our thanks to them and many others for making this Christmas even more special for us.
And on that note, to all our customers and friends in Duncan and beyond, thank you so much for your patronage. We’re ever grateful and humbled that you continue to support our shop, and wish nothing but the best for all of you this holiday season and throughout 2010.
Merry Christmas!

This past summer, Google Street View cruised through southern Vancouver Island and caught some shots of the bookstore. Nice photos for us, and especially handy for people visiting from out of town and not sure what the store looks like.
Below, you can see the store’s front entrance on Ingram Street, and a peek at the side entrance in the Duncan City Square.
P.S. You can find the original source image at Google Maps here, and then use it as a starting spot to see the rest of our beautiful downtown area.
